Book The Next Port: 40,000 miles, 43 countries, 87 islands and countless adventures (Sailing Adventures Book 1) Review :

Nice narrative of a couple's around-the-world cruise in their 42' sailboat. Well-told accounts of their many adventures (and a few misadventures) as they encounter numerous cultures and peoples as they travel across the globe. Informative, insightful, and educational. I was most impressed with the author's mechanical and engineering-on-the-fly abilities. Experiencing mechanical hardships on a regular basis, Heyward is able to fix most everything that goes wrong, or at least improvise until they reach the next port. When I read travel books such as these, I always have Google Earth up on my laptop, and follow along the routes to these remote places I'll more than likely will never get to visit. I learned quite a bit about the varied topography of the South Pacific Islands, the reefs and currents that play havoc for many a mariner, and also about the locals and their hospitality and lifestyle. Ditto with the Brazilian portion of the voyage. This book doesn't disappoint in that regard. My only mild complaint is that there are times that the author neglects to mention that they've sailed on to another island and I'm fruitlessly searching for a particular harbor or town, only to learn that I am couple of islands behind! This happens mostly from Australia through Indonesia, but that's just my observation as a geography nut. All in all, a pretty darn good read, especially for the armchair world traveller such as myself.
As a former cruiser myself, I read this book with interest. They left about a year ahead of me and went all the way. I turned around at Tahiti. The Coleman's trip is exhaustive and exhausting if you have been out there. The sense memories come flooding back. I don't know if I would have had the stamina they did. However, if you have an interest in cruising, this is perfectly illustrative of the live you live and the many frustrations you will find along the way, though I think they glossed over a lot of the finer details of day to day existence on a small sailboat. They did however, go to lots of interesting places. The fact that they have returned to Southern Europe with a motor vessel tells you a lot about where we in the west find our greatest enjoyment and comfort.
